Topsoil in Cork
Most people order the wrong amount of topsoil because depth matters far more than area. Work out what you actually need first, then talk to a supplier.
How much topsoil do I need?
Enter the area you are covering and how deep you want it.
Worked at a bulk density of 1.4 tonnes per cubic metre, which is mid-range for screened topsoil at normal moisture. Wet soil weighs more. Order a little over rather than under, because soil settles and a part load costs more to deliver than the extra you would have bought first time.
How much will one tonne of topsoil cover?
One tonne is roughly 0.71 cubic metres. How far that goes depends entirely on depth:
| Depth | Typical job | One tonne covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5cm | Top dressing a lawn | 28.6 m² |
| 5cm | Levelling and overseeding | 14.3 m² |
| 10cm | New lawn from seed or turf | 7.1 m² |
| 15cm | Flower and shrub beds | 4.8 m² |
| 30cm | Raised beds and vegetables | 2.4 m² |
What topsoil costs
Screened topsoil in Ireland generally runs somewhere around €60 to €110 for a one-tonne bulk bag, with loose loads cheaper per tonne once the job is big enough to justify a lorry. Observed prices in August 2026 ranged from €60 to €110 a bag across Dublin, Cork and Galway suppliers, and a Galway discussion thread reported quotes anywhere from €30 to €150 depending on grade.
We deliberately do not list a price against each supplier. Topsoil pricing moves with season, grade and delivery distance, and one of the prices we checked had already changed within the same week. A stale price table is worse than none, so ring for a current quote.

Frequently asked questions
How much does topsoil cost in Cork?
Screened topsoil in Ireland typically runs about €60 to €110 for a one-tonne bulk bag, with loose loads working out cheaper per tonne on larger jobs. Price depends on grade, how far it has to travel and the time of year, so check the current rate with the supplier directly.
How much will one tonne of topsoil cover?
Roughly 14m² at 10cm deep, or about 28m² at 5cm. One tonne is around 0.71 cubic metres, so coverage falls away quickly as depth increases. Use the calculator above for your own measurements.
Is it cheaper to buy topsoil in bags or in bulk?
Bulk is far cheaper per tonne. Small bagged topsoil from a garden centre suits pots and patching only. Once you are covering more than a few square metres, a one-tonne bulk bag or a loose load costs a fraction as much for the same volume.
What is BS 3882 topsoil?
BS 3882 is the British Standard for topsoil specification, covering things like pH, nutrient content, stone content and contaminants. Some Irish suppliers certify their soil to it, which gives you a defined quality rather than an unverified description.
How deep should topsoil be?
About 10cm for a new lawn, 15cm or more for flower and shrub beds, and 30cm for raised beds and vegetables. For top dressing an existing lawn, 2.5cm is enough.

If the ground you are covering drains badly, adding topsoil on top rarely fixes it. Find out what is underneath first.
