Frequently asked questions

How much does a soil test cost in Ireland?

Published prices run from about €17 for a basic agricultural test up to €124 for a full package. Teagasc charges €27 for its basic S1 test and €38 for the common grassland package. IAS Laboratories starts at €19.15. Two of the five labs listed do not publish prices online.

Which soil testing labs are accredited in Ireland?

IAS Laboratories, Southern Scientific Ireland and FBA Laboratories all hold INAB accreditation to ISO 17025. FBA is also approved by the Department of Agriculture for soil analysis under agricultural schemes.

Do I have to use a lab in my own county?

No. All of the labs listed accept samples by post from anywhere in Ireland, so location only matters if you would rather drop samples in yourself.

When should I take a soil sample?

Between September and March, and at least three months after the last application of phosphorus or potassium. IAS Laboratories recommends testing every three to five years.

Is a home soil test kit good enough?

For a rough indication of pH, yes. For anything you are spending money on, such as lime or fertiliser, or for results needed under the Nitrates regulations, you need an accredited laboratory test measuring lime requirement and nutrient indices.
